ADHD Sensory Overload in Women: What Happens in Your Brain β€” and What Actually Helps

The supermarket on a Saturday afternoon. A birthday party where everyone is talking at once. An open-plan office. Your children all needing something simultaneously while a podcast is playing in the background. For many women with ADHD, these aren't just mildly stressful β€” they trigger something that feels like a system shutdown.

This is sensory overload. And it's not about being "too sensitive" or needing to toughen up. It's about what happens in an ADHD brain when the incoming information exceeds the brain's filtering capacity.

"I used to think I was just bad at being in the world. Too overwhelmed by things that other people seemed to handle fine. After my diagnosis, I understood: my brain doesn't filter sensory input the way theirs does. That's not weakness. It's neurology."

Why ADHD brains experience sensory overload differently

The neurotypical brain has a highly efficient filtering system β€” it automatically tunes out background noise, irrelevant sensory information, and stimuli that aren't important in the current moment. This filtering happens largely unconsciously, in the prefrontal cortex and sensory processing centres.

In ADHD, this filtering system is less reliable. The brain receives more of the sensory environment β€” not more intensely necessarily, but with less automatic suppression of the irrelevant. The hum of the air conditioning, the conversation at the next table, the texture of the clothing label β€” all of it competes for attention alongside the important information.

When the total sensory load crosses a threshold, the brain shifts into a kind of emergency mode: concentration collapses, emotional regulation becomes difficult, and the overwhelming desire to escape the environment takes over. This isn't anxiety or weakness β€” it's a regulatory system that has hit its limit.

The luteal phase increases overload risk: In the two weeks before your period, sensory sensitivity often increases as estrogen drops. What you can manage in the follicular phase may become genuinely overwhelming in the luteal phase. If you track your cycle and your overload episodes, you'll often find a pattern.

After a high-sensory environment β€” shopping, a social event, a difficult meeting β€” schedule quiet time. Not as a luxury, but as a physiological necessity. The ADHD brain needs more recovery time than a neurotypical one after sensory load.

One of the most practical tools available. Using them for tasks requiring concentration, in crowded environments, or during family mealtimes where background noise is unavoidable β€” they reduce the total sensory load significantly.

Identify your personal threshold and plan around it
Notice which environments and situations consistently trigger overload for you specifically. Then: schedule high-sensory obligations earlier in the day when your capacity is higher, avoid stacking multiple high-sensory demands in one day, and protect recovery time afterwards.

Create a sensory refuge at home
A specific place β€” a corner, a room, even a chair β€” where sensory input is reduced: dim light, quiet, comfortable textures. Having a designated retreat makes recovery faster and signals to the nervous system that this is a safe place to decompress.

Clothing matters more than you think
Remove unnecessary sensory friction: cut labels out, choose soft fabrics, wear shoes that don't distract you. This is not trivial β€” every source of low-level sensory irritation contributes to the total load. Reducing it where possible preserves capacity for things that matter.

Name it when it's happening
To yourself: "This is sensory overload, not a crisis." To people you trust: "I'm overstimulated and need ten minutes." Naming the state reduces its power β€” and creates the possibility of a response rather than a reaction.
